Iowa State Education Association president Chris Bern visited Burlington on March 19 to present the ISEA Friend of Education Award to the Leopold Heritage Group. The award was accepted by Steve Brower on behalf on LHG. Bern said, “This project truly embodies what this award is about. It is a community group trying to make a contribution to the students.” Leopold Heritage Group is building a prairie classroom at Aldo Leopold Middle School; has sponsored the Leopold Writing and Art Contest for the past six years, which encourages student writing, art, and photography; hosted a premiere of the new Leopold documentary, Green Fire; and has sponsored a variety of other events, including bird watching, Leopold scholars as speakers, and wild flower walks. Leopold Heritage Group works hard to promote Leopold’s legacy of caring for the land, because man is a member of the land, not just an owner and manipulator of its resources.
