What are the urban forest management practices that you feel should be done, but your boss, or some other equally unqualified person, doesn't let you do? What would you do, what do you think is most important urban forest management practice that should be performed. Drury University is creating their tree maintenance policy, what should it look like?

Hello,

I think you are felling what many tree managers experience in trying to justify the need to manage your resource effectively.  Convincing campus managers the need to manage trees is a matter of knowing what they are concerned with and prioritizing your needs.

Safety, minimum levels of care, accomplishments with existing staff and resources vs. what you can accomplish with more are common types of information to be ready with at these discussions.

Whatever department manages trees and grounds may also consider cost/benefit ratios and that can be assembled with historical data.

Try to collect tree inventory type data on maintenance needs for key areas of campus as examples.

...and a big thanks to Emma B for recommending the Tree Campus program.  We have three others in Missouri and you can contact your local MDC Urban Forester in the Springfield office for help in reaching them and site specific needs

Enjoy!
