Comment by Charles Marcus on March 23, 2012 at 3:53pm Two large baldcypress trees in Hamilton County have now been declared the new co-champion baldcypress trees of Florida. Both trees are located on property belonging to the Suwannee River Water Management District, roughly 10 miles SW of Jasper and near the Florida Trail. For those who don't mind walking, wet feet, and catclaw briars, they are quite the find.
Comment by Charles Marcus on February 10, 2012 at 1:53pm As we speak, the Florida Forest Service is interviewing (actually measuring) potential replacement champions for the Senator. Their locations are a bit more remote, but I think you will agree that the one we select will be a magnificent specimen. Also, I believe that the staff at Seminole County Parks and Rec are developing an educational kiosk about baldcypress trees that will also serve as a memorial to the Senator. Stand by for more details.

Comment by Don Richardson on January 16, 2012 at 6:19pm Very sad - a national urban forestry tragedy. Sounds like the fire may have been preventable. See history and before photos of The Senator, oldest pond cypress in the world, at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senator_(tree) .
