Historical Artifacts in Your Yard

We walk and move where others have been. That is a very loose definition of history and if you put this thought in your mind while working in your yard or moving about in your sphere, historical inquiry will be born there.

My inquiry always leads me to maps. The Roswell Historical Society is a wonderful source for old maps. It was the late Aubrey Morris who alerted me to this and urged…

Missouri Tells Us Why Leaves Change Color

Ever wonder why trees’ leaves change color?

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, tree leaves have cells that provide the tree with food throughout the year. The cells are made up of chlorophyll, which makes the leaves green. Because of the colder weather in the fall and winter,…

When is it Time to Remove a Tree?

We grow to love the trees near our homes as if they are a part of our family. Yet, trees can grow old and decay, which may cause them to change from beloved assets into liabilities.

So how do we know when our trees have crossed the line?  There are many signs that can give away a tree’s state of…

Reading the leaves

As a backyard tree grower I am always looking to the leaves for clues to the current condition of the tree. Leaf curl on some of my “canary” trees will tell me that the trees need watering. Brown margins on the leaves might indicate too much fertilizer was applied. Chlorotic (yellowing) leaves, I’ve read, can be caused by too much or too little of one nutrient or another. My current quandary: What’s causing new growth to be pale? (I wish I had paid better attention in HORT101.)

It’s… Continue

Yes, I Have EAB in My Trees!

With all of the bugs and crud that we hear of, it can be difficult to keep up with which may pose the greatest risk to us personally. It can be easy to adopt a “Not In My Back Yard (NIMBY) attitude. In truth, until you are affected personally, be it on a yard level, or a cityscape, it can be easy to put off a plan for action. I haven’t ignored the threat of emerald ash borer (EAB), but I have made the unpleasant discovery of it in my yard in early September.

Knowing that EAB had been… Continue

Nature Conservancy Removes Tamarisk on the Muddy River

Notes from Spring 2011 "Nature Conservancy-Nevada " .

Conservancy property along the Muddy River in Moapa, Nevada was rife with Tamarisk. Tamarisk is know to increase the salinity of the soil where it grows making it difficult for many species to establish themselves. Tamarisk is a halophyte-a plant that has special abilities enabling them to take up very salty ground water without suffering the disasterous consequences on their cells's interiors.  Tamarisk can isolate these salts in…
