Famous Plane Trees in France Succumb to Fungus

Thousands of 200-year-old plane trees along the banks of the Canal du Midi, a historic waterway and World Heritage Site that dates to the reign of the Sun King, will have to be cut down because of a deadly fungus.

Two thousand trees along the canal have so far been hit by the microfungus Ceratocystis platani – which arrived in France via the contaminated wooden ammunition boxes of American GIs in the second world war. But the disease has been spreading steadily along the canal since…

Trees Rock

I have always been fascinated by Trees that grow in rock.  I enjoy the contrast between the hard and soft and the plant and the mineral. I also am inspired by the opportunistic nature of a tree that will make itself at home in the least hospitable areas.  One of my favorite trees in the Southeast, the small but opportunistic Georgia Oak, is one tree that prefers the rocky outcrops. On a recent trip to California I documented some rock loving trees.  Enjoy.  … Continue

Loblolly Pine Failure

Loblolly Pines are prevalent in the deep south and are very common in the South's Urban Forest.  I had the false impression that Loblolly Pine trees typically failed in ice storms in the winter or by snapping.  Here is a picture of a Loblolly Pine that failed on top of my friend's house in Atlanta.  Perhaps some trees had been removed near it changing the load of the tree or it was the… Continue

Good Bugs, Bad Bugs

The next time you see an insect, take a closer look. Instead of writhing and yelping, take a moment to consider its impact. Often times, what you see crawling on the sidewalk or navigating tall grass isn’t harmful—in fact, it may even be beneficial. Ladybugs, praying mantises and dragonflies are all considered “good” bugs. They get rid of many of the creepy-crawling pests most people dislike.…

Is Your Tree Healthy?

Just like with people, height is often indicative of the health of your tree. Is it receiving the proper nutrients? Are there any parasites inhibiting its growth? Fig Madness!!!!

I have a Fig tree that is nearly 25' tall with tons and tons of Figs. I hate picking them up every day. Is there either a spray to put on the tree to make it Steril? or How much of the tree can be cut off and not kill it?

In Community Forests, We Trust

By Aaron Everett, Washington State Forester

The link between communities and working forests is stronger than we often take time to realize.

Clean air and water, outdoor recreation, natural resource jobs, and fish and wildlife habitat –these are benefits of forests, without which life in our communities would certainly be less enjoyable, and in some cases, impossible. Yet it’s hard to remember the connection—between the trees off in the distance and, for…

The Secret Forest

The soil was alive, the trees emanated old age, and the shade was prolific with pockets of light bursting through.  All expected qualities of an old growth forest.   The unexpected was the sound of airplanes overhead and cars from a nearby major road.   This was my experience at…

Portland’s Forests Need Your Help!

When you imagine a forest, what comes to mind? Do you envision a tropical rainforest overflowing with exotic plants and animals? Or maybe a thick expanse of tall pine trees that stretches on forever? For most people, these are some of the images the word “forest” provokes. However, hose living in Portland, Maine may have a drastically different picture in mind—one of their own city.…

HELP! My little dogwood isn't doing well!

I bought a pink dogwood trying to bring some color and trees to my new yard. It did alright for a while, then while I was on vacation it somehow took a turn for the worst. When I came back it didn't look healthy. Its leaves looked crinkle-y and there were little gnaty looking things flying around it. I talked to the nursery, who GAVE me a bottle of systemic drench to use (very nice of them I think) and told me to try it.  It's not looking much better, and I'm desperately trying to think of…
