Long Overdue Nature Center Update

Hello again, The Grove! We here at Yu Ying have been working hard on the final cleanup and replanting for 2012, in our Nature Center.  Our one acre lot is now (almost) free of trash and permeable paths have been installed to allow students a safer and more beautiful walk to the school.  Our number one goal has been to create a fully functioning, educational urban forest for our students to learn from, but we are also happy to announce that our new paths allow our students to be dropped off…See More

The hardest working forest in all of Washington, DC

Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School moved into its permanent home at 220 Taylor Street, NE in the fall of 2011.  While we worked very hard on the amazing building (an old monastery built in 1902) to get it renovated to house our students, we also wanted to focus on giving our students an amazing outdoor classroom, in which they could experience science and nature firsthand.  A number of edible gardens and a playground have been built on the 2 acre part of the lot that our building…See More

I plant trees because....
We want to enhance the outdoor learning experience of our students, as well as protect and nourish the amazing urban forest that is a part of our campus

We are a full immersion, bi-lingual Mandarin/English public school in Washington, DC.  Recently we moved into our permanent home in the Brookland neighborhood of Ward 5 and found ourselves the proud new owners of several acres of impressive urban forest.  In order to be good stewards of our new land, we'll be removing invasive species, replanting the understory and adding several outdoor classrooms for our students to enjoy.  Please follow our story on The Grove as we improve our tree-covered campus!

Second Volunteer Day in Yu Ying's Nature Center

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 1:00pm 0 Comments

Yu Ying's Nature Center saw its second big volunteer day last weekend and if the first weekend was entirely too hot, there were certainly none of those complaints this weekend....bad news is the complaints just shifted to the rain that fell the entire day, slowing the process.  The good news is that we were able to follow the master plan created with our sustainability partners and install crush stone paths, drainage channels,  outdoor classrooms and begin work on the stormwater runoff…
