New Monthly Feature: Geuss the Bud

With the exception of a few oak and beech trees- it's twig season out there! To celebrate, we will be running a new feature on Vermont Grove this twig season called Guess the Bud.Each month we will be posting a picture of a tree bud- the first one to correctly guess the species wins! To kick it off- here is November's bud: This tree is native to Vermont and gives us a lot to be thankful for.  The bud is sharply pointed and conical- reminding some of an old fashion sugar ice cream cone. Can you…See More

Winners of the 2012 Hall of Horror Tree Blooper Contest

At Vermont's Tree Steward Conference on October 20, 2012, the winners of our Hall of Horrors contest were selected. The winners represent the best tree bloopers we don't ever want to see again- BEWARE - They are very scary! The contest will run again in 2013 so be on the lookout for tree bloopers over the next year. You don't have to attend the conference to enter (though it's worth it just to see the display of tree abnormalites). We hope by sharing these horrors, we can help stop them from…See More

EVENT: Tree Technology for Mobile Phones Webinar, July 19th 1pm

Millions of Americans have access to the latest technology in the palms of their hands. Smartphone applications, or “apps,” not only play games and connect to the web–they can also increase awareness and engagement in managing urban forests. Cities and organizations can use apps to recruit and educate volunteers, to receive tree status updates from people on the street, to lead interactive guided tours, and to help residents identify trees in their neighborhoods. When Trees Fly

You've heard of the expression 'when pigs fly,'  here's a new twist: On a recent field trip to the Asian Longhorned Beetle infestation in Worcester, MA, 18 agency staff, UCF advisory council members and VT Forest Pest First Detector learned first-hand what happens when trees fly.Led by our trusty guides Marc and Joe, both with…See More

What's your favorite flowering tree?

What a whacky spring!  Trees have certainly been responding to the warm weather...crabapples are blooming around the state. Here in central VT, silver maples flower buds are ready to pop! I love this time of year for the flowering trees.  Trees that might otherwise go unnoticed any other time of the year- grab our…See More

Is there any chance that tree we saw was a young Silver Maple?  I saw some saplings at the Intervale Nursery the other day and they had that same distinct yellow-y orange color.

Hi Kate,

Good discussion topic you have started! I find a good way to get things rolling is by posting a photo of spring, then click on  "share" below the photo, add a comment if they have seen spring, and then list emails of friends and collegues.  The Grove will format an awesome email that has your picture, comment, and mission of The Grove.  Let me know if you have any questions!  Neil, Grove Online Community Mgr.
