Going to Seed

Browsing nursery catalogs has long been a favorite pastime for me. Musing the colorful photos and descriptions will often bring up childhood memories of our backyard orchard, or recalling the excitement of opening a delivery of long cardboard boxes labeled “Live Plants” – bareroot tree seedlings packed in moist straw. And I imagine a few additions to my small backyard nursery. After making a wish list I come out of my dream-state to the reality: There’s no yard space available for new trees!…See More

Doodling fun: binary trees, Fibonacci, slug cats, and much more!

If you’ve explored the Khan Academy online, you may have discovered some entertaining videos with Vi Hart. With colorful “doodling” she illustrates patterns in nature, with questions and discoveries from several fields of science – all while she is supposedly bored in her math class. It’s a lot of fun. Her videos are at http://www.khanacademy.org/math/vi-hartSee More

Birding in Piedmont Park

I met with a bird-watching group this morning in Piedmont Park for one of their monthly walks in the park – something I’ve wanted to do for several years. With binoculars, field guides, and birding apps on iPhones, we began a long loop in the Park, which included the Northwoods and a short stretch on the Atlanta Beltline. Some of the highlights on this outing: a male wood duck perched above the water near the gazebo, a red-shouldered hawk, a female orchard oriole feeding her young, a red-headed…See More

Magnolia grandiflora, birds eye view 1 24 11

A good climbing tree that offers a "grand" view. I planted this tree in about 1980, and is over 50 feet tall.

Interests
Growing trees in containers, planting out quality trees in suitable sites.
Bicycling, "nature walks", and outdoor adventures in general.
Composting, vermicomposting, cisterns and other waterworks.
Place of Work
Repair/remodeling/landscape contractor working from home
I plant trees because....
I met lots of nice folks at Dearborn Park, DeKalb County, on Jan. 15, 2011 where we planted 49 container-grown trees (from my backyard nursery) and quite a few bare-root white oak seedlings from Georgia Forestry Commission. This is my first involvement with tree planting in DeKalb, and I'm looking forward to the next!

You can always rant in the Geogia Discussion Group, but first you must join the Georgia Group, click on Georgia grove under Groups, click on Join State Group located in the right corner under the main photo.  Also please note there is a video under videos outlining how to properly prune a crape myrtle.
