An American Chestnut (Castanea dentata) standing 40' high with a 28" diameter trunk located in Atlanta Georgia in a neighborhood near Clairmont Road and I-85 this tree is an urban jewel. It is rare to see a chestnut of this size especially in the metro-Atlanta area. I noticed this tree driving by thinking it was a sasafrass and upon closer inspection it was a chestnut. It's not this tree's size that impresses me, its it withstanding the test of time in an urban neighborhood where it could have been carelessly cut down or diseased. The street it is located on is Skyland Trail near Drew Valley Road.
