During the month of June the newly formed Urban Forestry Advisory program (formerly MUF) will be working with the West TN Chapter of TUFC to hold volunteer work days.  Most work will be scheduled on Saturdays from 10am-3pm at Elmwood cemetery.  Be looking for a post on the Grove for further information.  These will be great volunteer opportunities to complete your hours for the program.  If you are interested in what's new with the program, feel free to start a discussion on the UTMUF page.  Have a good Holiday!

Elmwood corrective pruning event has been canceled due to low volunteerism.  We hope to reschedule the event soon.  We also hope that you will come out to help!

Thanks Everyone

Great stats on Tennessee!

TN population statistics for the 2010 census have been posted by the Census Bureau.  Here are 10 Tennessee fun facts on the population of our cities and towns from my urban forestry perspective.

1.  The state population is 6,346,105

2.  In 1990, TN had 4 cities over 100,000 pop., in 2000 there were 5 cities, and in 2010 there are 6.

 3.  8 of our 10 largest cities are Tree City USA.  17 of our 25 largest cities are Tree City USA

4.  29.3 % of the state population lives in a Tree City

5.  25.5% of the state population lives in our 4 largest cities, 33.2% live in the 10 largest cities, and 41.8 percent live in our 25 largest cities.

 6.  50 percent of the population lives in the 63 largest cities.  If you live in a city or town larger than 8,500 pop., you are in the half that live in cities.

 7.  Memphis is still our largest city at 646,889, but lost about 3,200 pop from the 2000 census.

 8.  Our smallest incorporated town is Saulsbury, pop. 81.

9.  Our smallest Tree City is Bell Buckle at pop 500, but Pittman Center is close at 502 pop.

10.  The chart below lists the population of our largest 25 cities and our 40 Tree City USA's.  If the city has a strike through, like this, it is not a Tree City USA.  Memphis is not a Tree City, but is working to achieve Tree City status.

Nick -
I'm viewing photo on phone - it looks like the bark on the bottom half of trunk is missing. Is that an optical illusion?
Comment by UT Master Urban Foresters on January 4, 2011 at 2:20pm
I'm think more along the lines iof the tree itself...

Nick-based on your picture, it appears to have a non-functioning water catch basin for the tree that has been planted on a hillside; probably should expect some compromising above the root collar area as well should the backfill remain against the lower trunk.

Take a look at my user picture.  Anyone know what is wrong with this picture?

- the polysaccharide you speak of - augarosa - is a natural substance. What type of plabnt material is it found in? Do you have to process the plant material to extract it? It sounds like a discovery that could potentially change the world!
