About the New York State Urban and Community Forestry Council

The NYS Urban and Community Forestry Council was organized formally in 1999, and is made up of volunteers who work to advise and assist the NYS Department of Conservation (DEC) in executing its Urban and Community Forestry policies. Since its inception, the Council has evolved into a powerful force for advocacy, education and technology transfer. The Council's major funding is supplied through the USDA Forest Service and supplemented by membership dues and independent contributions. The NYS Urban and Community Forestry program, under the direction of the Council, is a partnership of public, private and volunteer organizations and individuals that fosters comprehensive planning, management and education throughout New York to create a healthy urban and community forest and enhance quality of life. The Council and program’s key initiatives are to strengthen the structure and membership of the Council board, identify and promote the benefits of trees and to provide educational and management tools to advance urban forestry efforts across the state of New York.

While walking my dog yesterday I was bothered by the amount of litter "caught" in the edge of the forested areas. In addition to poop, I picked up the garbage. It's a much more pleasant walk now.

You would think it odd for a person in SD to join the "grove" for NY. Well, let me explain. I lived in Binghamton  until 1991 when I moved to SD to work for the State Department of Agriculture. I still have relatives in the area and I was just there for a short visit in June of 2011. My AAS and BS degrees are from SUNY College of ESF in Syracuse. Plus, I  love the Adirondack Mountains!
