Congratulations to the Regional Planning Commission (southern Nevada). The commission recognized the growing need for a regionally accepted Plant List (trees and shrubs) and formed a commitee to develop one. That committee did a spendid job. They…Continue

Comment by Laura Eisenberg on January 25, 2012 at 4:49pm Hi Kurtis,
Here are some comments on the Purple Robed Locust by various arborists who work in Las Vegas.
1.There are some really nice specimens (of Purple Robed Locust) at UNLV. One in a lawn and some in small planters by the student union - they look good, but these are young trees.
2. At the springs preserve there are 2 horribly sunscalded (Purple Robed Locust) with obvious borer damages and I am sure won't last more than another year or two.
3.At Henderson campus (CSN) they took out about 5 Purple Robed Locust that only lasted 5 years or so - all had borers and died. ..... these plants are really susceptible to borers and they had even painted the trunks white in hopes of preventing the sunscalding.
4. I suspect in a lawn with good soil and lots of water with protection from west sun Purple Robed Locust are nice trees, but if you are not very careful with them, you are going to kill them quickly...
5. Another interesting and tell tale sign (in my estamation) is that you never see Mary Irish or any of the really good authors write about using these plants in the hot deserts.
6. I have a Purple Robed Locust in my from yard. Love it! However, it can get iron deficiencies, and borers. Preventative treatments of imidacloprid/permethrin and good cultural practices (watering, mulch, nutrients, hugs, etc) are a must. Love it though! and has a gorgeous, showy, fragrant flower. Hope this helps ~ Matty
Can anyone tell me why Purple Robe Locusts generally do so poorly here? Appreciate it. I have an HOA that I'm trying to steer away from this tree.
