I'm devastated by the loss of "The Senator" The worlds Oldest and Largest Cypress tree located in Central Florida. It caught fire and burned to the ground this morning. Unbelievable loss..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senator_(tree)

Checked with some local experts. Because of the heavy lime soils, magnolias do not grow well in the Miami area. You can use the tree selector program located at the following link to find an alternative. http://lyra.ifas.ufl.edu/FloridaTrees/. Also, you can contact either Mark Torok with the Florida Forest Service in Davie or Henry Mayer with the Cooperative Extension Service in Dade County for additional assistance. Good luck.

My mother-in-law lives in Miami, but loves Magnolia trees. Is there any species of magnolia suited for this environment?

Spread the word about Tree Campus USA with local college officials, faculty, groups, and students. The student rate is $29, which is not on the poster. They can attend this event as a single day, or register for the whole 3-4 day Partners Conference at Disney Coronado. Open the attached flyer for more details. Hey all you fellow Grovers,

In case you haven't heard, the Tour des Trees bicycle ride raises money for the TREE Fund (TREE = Tree Research Education Endowment Fund). This Fund supplies money to reserachers like Drs. Monica Elliott, Ed Gilman, Nina Bassuk, Nelda Matheny, etc to research urban trees - their care, health, and survival. Also supplying scholarship money to students of Urban Forestry and Arboriculture.

I ride in the Tour. To do so I am obligated to raise $3500 for the TREE Fund.

Please consider donating to my ride. Any amount helps, and every dollar you donate goes directly to tree research. The Tour itself is totally sponsor supported.

You can click on the link below to go directly to my Donation page.

Please consider supporting the Tour des Trees. You can go to

www.tourdestrees.org for our route map, daily itinerary, and a bunch more information.

Thank you!

The 2011 Partners in Community Forestry National Conference heads to Central Florida, The Partners Conference serves as the national platform for sharing best practices, innovations and models of successful urban forestry programs and projects. This is a great opportunity to connect with urban forestry leaders and other professional peers. This year's event will feature preconference activities, general and concurrent sessions, evening presentations, a networking reception and a half-day urban forestry tour. Register online now and receive $50 off the regular conference rate.  Visit www.fufc.org for the Arbor Day Foundation link to the conference.

Your Florida Urban Forestry Council has been hard at work coordinating with Conference leaders and local partners to showcase Central Florida's urban forest.  You will not want to miss this!!  The University of Central Florida will be hosting a Tree Campus Summit, the City of Orlando in conjunction with the Orlando Utilities Commission will take attendees through the streets and around the lakes on several guided bus tours, and Keep Orlando Beautiful and Green Up Orlando are partnering with the Alliance for Community Trees and CSX Transportation for some volunteer tree plantings.  Additional partners include Greenscape of Jacksonville, City of Winter Park, and Orange County IFAS.

As of July 1, the Florida Division of Forestry was renamed the Florida Forest Service. Same services provided, just under a different moniker.

Help me spread the word.
