Braving the Bright Sun to Plant Shade Trees
The Eureka Springs Elementary and Middle Schools celebrated Arbor Day in Eureka Springs on Friday, with Mayor Morris Pate, Bruce Levine and the Tree City USA Committee, Cub Scouts from Pack 67, and Honor Guard provided by American Legion Post 67. "The Star Spangled Banner" was performed by the High School Band and Choir. Students helped to plant, mulch, and water 5 Maple trees in the play yard donated by Community First Bank and also planted 60 Red Bud and Shumard Oak seedlings provided by the Arkansas Forestry Commission.

We adopted the S.T.O.P.- Shade Trees on Playgrounds initiative as the focus for this year's ceremony.
Hopefully the school can continue to add more shade through plantings every Arbor Day!

Working with the kids to improve their play area has been so enjoyable.
I'm hoping to plant a few buckets of leafed out Oak seedlings, but gosh the soil is hard and rocky for the kids to dig...
