Height: 76.1 feet
Circumference: 4.5 feet
Diameter: 17.04 inches

The Bigleaf Magnolia, Magnolia macrophylla, located at Woodlands Garden is a Champion Tree of metro Atlanta. This tree is cared for by the staff of the public garden and can be visited any day of the year by visitors. This Champion provides a continuous umbrella of leaves during the summer and stretches far up into the canopy just beside the Lawn at Woodlands. This native tree is a feature in every season but especially in summer due to the large leaves which can sometimes reach 2 feet across. The leaves that drop in the fall are used to produce kid-friendly wings during the event 'Fairies in the Garden' hosted at Woodlands. Most people who visit the Garden and give this tree a hug (it's located right by the path and very hug-able) recognize the species but are amazed when they look up because its canopy spreads so far and the large leaves truly connect to create an umbrella of leaves. Come visit and see this Champion Bigleaf Magnolia for yourself!

    • I voted for this one and sent the link to my friends! I LOVE, LOVE LOVE this last photo. That could be the icon for our many clear cut forests on the chopping block here in Atlanta as we watch the destruction of our city in the forest under Mayor Reeds watch.
