Location:Traer, Iowa

This American chestnut is a survivor from as many as 4 billion chestnut trees that once grew in America. It is lucky to be growing outside the native range, in Buckingham Cemetery, Traer, Iowa. Probably about 4.5 feet dbh and 80 feet tall.

  • Nice to see a remnant of this iconic American species photographed and nominated!   The American Chestnut Foundation and all its member state chapters have been working tirelessly since 1983 to develop a blight resistant American cultivar that can be returned to our forests.   Glad to say that TACF appears to be on the cusp of achieving this goal.
